The traditional anniversary list assigns paper to the first year, cotton to the second and leather to the third. Most of the list is arbitrary. This entry is not.
Why leather, for year three
The materials in the early years get more durable as the years go up, and the metaphor is not subtle: the thing is supposed to be getting sturdier.
Leather sits at the point where it stops being fragile. Paper tears. Cotton wears thin. Leather does something else. It marks, darkens, and softens, and none of that is failure. A three-year-old leather object looks better than a new one, which is a claim you cannot make about much.
That is the whole reason the tradition survived. It is a good metaphor that happens to also be a good object.
What actually works as a gift
The instinct is a wallet. Wallets are personal in a way that makes them a difficult gift, because people are particular about how they carry money and will not say so.
Better options are things that live in a shared space.
- A valet tray. It goes on the nightstand or the entry table, which means it is in the room every day. A stamped date on the base is quiet rather than sentimental. See the tray.
- A flask. Works when there is a shared drink or a shared trip behind it. The hip flask takes a date well.
- A pair of camp mugs. If the marriage involves being outside. Two names, one set. The mugs get used more than most gifts.
- Something for a specific habit. If they carry a multi-tool every day, a sheath is more personal than a generic leather object, because it means you noticed.
What to put on it
Three options, in order of how well they age.
- The date. Ages best. Means nothing to anyone else, which is the point.
- Coordinates. Where you met, married, or moved. Reads as a number until someone asks.
- Initials. Safe, and safe is fine.
What does not age well is a phrase. A line that sounds right in year three can be hard to look at in year fifteen. Shorter is safer, and the reasoning is in hand-stamped brass.
Modern list, if you prefer it
The modern American list gives crystal for the third year. Nothing wrong with it. But crystal goes in a cabinet and leather goes in a pocket, and only one of them will look like your marriage in ten years.
More on that change over time in why leather darkens.
